Emmy Fashion – Let’s Have some Fun!

Posted in Entertainment on August 30, 2010 by darmyers

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know it will be 16 months on Wednesday that I have had the television unhooked.  I always said, when I start to miss it, I will get it again.  But guess what, for the most part, I haven’t missed.  What television are calling ‘stars’ these days, I’m sorry, Katherine Hepburn was a star, a person on a reality tv show is not a star.

That’s not to say I haven’t missed a few components, like Awards Shows.  I love watching the Oscars, the Golden Globes, the People’s Choice, and yes the Emmy’s.  So while I didn’t get to see the actual broadcast, you can’t miss the Emmy Fashions, thanks to the Internet.  So, I’m going to have a bit of fun and tell you what I thought.  You can certainly let me know if you agree or disagree.  It will be fun!

Best Dressed in my Opinion. (After all, that is what this blog is called)

So, Clare Danes, Lea Michelle, Sofia Vergara, Anna Paquin and Julianna Marguiles rocked it!  Big Time.

Kim Kardashian and Kelly Osbourne – great dresses – when wearing white you should wear a bra.

Heidi Klum – Love you, Love the Legs, but you need to start dressing your age.

What were you thinking goes to Keri Russell in that ill-fitting pink dress – Not a good choice for you.  And Emily Deschanel – Barney went out of style years ago… stay away from Purple Barney looking dresses.

Eva Longoria Parker, although you looked classic in black, it was a little boring, a little predictable and been done before.  A little disappointing.

Anyway, you can let me know what you thought!

Alan Jackson rolls through Newfoundland with the Freight Train Tour

Posted in Entertainment on August 28, 2010 by darmyers

It was full steam ahead as Alan Jackson played to 3 sold out nights at the Mile One Centre in St. John’s recently.    The multi award winner – too many to mention – wowed the crowd with all the fan favorites, while at the same time throwing out numerous guitar picks as souveniers.  You name it, he sang it.  From older favorites like ‘Don’t Rock the Jukebox’ to his heartwarming tribute to the 911 attacks ‘Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning’ to future favorites from his latest CD ‘Freight Train’.

Jackson, who turns 52 this coming October 17th, was the true professional, entertaining the audience from the time he walked on stage with a bottle of water in his hand, to his encore, when he took the time to sign as many autographs as he could.

Well done Alan Jackson!

I love the music of Johnny Reid.  And now he is coming to St. John’s on May 7th and 8th, and I have my tickets for the Friday, May 7th show.  I can’t wait.

It started for me with ‘Born to Roll’ and continued on with Kicking Stones and by the time ‘Darlin’ was released you couldn’t get a copy of the Kicking Stones cd anywhere in my hometown.  And Dance With Me has put out a string of  hits including ‘A Woman Like You’, ‘Dance With Me’ and ‘Old Flame’.  I own this cd and I love all the tracks, but my two favorites have not been released as singles yet, ‘My Old Friend’ and ‘Brings Me Home’.

If you would like a taste of Johnny Reid, check out his video for a Darlin’.  Enjoy, and buy his cd’s.  Please don’t pirate the music.

Marty Stuart shines in St. John`s

Posted in Entertainment on November 14, 2009 by darmyers

I had the priviledge Friday night of being in the Holy Heart Theatre in St. John`s to watch Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives.   It was one of the best country shows I have ever seen, and working in Country Radio for many years, I have seen many shows.

Before going in, I reflected on the fact that Marty Stuart played in Johnny Cash`s band, was married to his daughter Cindy, went to work for Lester Flatt at the age of 13, has played with Travis Tritt, Emmy-Lou Harris and many more, and probably doesn`t throw the word `Fabulous`around a lot, especially where it pertains to country music.  So I was looking forward to seeing him with the Fabulous Superlatives.

And I wasn`t disappointed.  From Marty Stuart`s known favorites like Tempted and Hillbilly Rock to some great classics like Long Black Veil and A Satisfied Mind, this was one great performance.

Hats off to the Superlatives, Paul Martin, Harry Stinson and `Cousin`Kenny Vaughn, who I had the great honor of sitting down and having a conversation after the show.  Playing with greats like McBride and the Ride, and back-up to many more, I took this quote from the Internet

Stuart is on a creative hot streak and, with guitarist Kenny Vaughan acting as his 6-string compadre, his mojo is at epic proportions.

It was indeed a priviledge.

It has just been announced that Ricky Gervais will be hosting the Golden Globe Awards in January.  This is going to be great.  If you haven’t heard of Ricky Gervais, or you missed him at the Emmy’s last year, when he did a stint with Steve Carrell and took his Emmy back, take a look at this clip.

Guaranteed to make you laugh!
